More than anything else the Bible teaches us that God cares about the poor. Wealth and its enticements, poverty and its destructiveness; these are big biblical themes in Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Imagine if this was all the food you had left for the family. Then think of God's commands: "...there should be no poor among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you..." (Deuteronomy, chapter 15, verse 4).
